Understanding Meridian licenses

Following are the basic Meridian license types:

• Database connection licenses are claimed by each computer when opening a vault document regardless of the client application used to open the document.

For Meridian, these licenses can be for Hypertrieve, SQL Server, or Oracle databases. When used with SQL Server or Oracle database management systems, each Meridian connection license requires a corresponding SQL Server or Oracle client access license. Meridian does not include licenses for the SQL Server and Oracle database management systems. Refer to your Microsoft or Oracle software license agreement to determine the required number of SQL Server or Oracle client access licenses.

• The Meridian client claims only a database connection license. A Web Access client license and a database connection license are claimed by the Meridian Web Access clients.
• Client licenses are claimed whenever a client application is opened, such as PowerUser, the Office Web Client, and so on. These licenses are claimed in addition to one database connection license. Multiple sessions of the same Meridian client on the same computer only claim one corresponding client license. For information on the features supported by each Meridian client license, consult a BlueCielo ECM Solutions sales representative or your BlueCielo ECM Solutions Partner.

Note    The exception is if Web Access is used to access a vault in read-only mode. In that case, no database connection license is claimed. Read-only Web Access mode is activated with a special URL that specifies the vault name and an existing public, web-enabled shared collection as described in the BlueCielo Meridian Enterprise Configuration Guide.

Application Integration clients claim only database connection licenses.

• Optional module licenses are claimed whenever the features of the optional module are used, such as the Asset Management Module, Publisher, AutoVue 3D Professional Advanced, and so on. Some modules require client licenses; other modules only require server licenses. If a module server license is claimed by a client application as the result of opening a vault that uses that module, the license will continue to be claimed even after a different vault is opened in the same client session that doesn't use the module. To release the server license, the client application must be restarted. • NEW   Special licenses are available for use only in development and test environments. The licenses are provided so that such environments can be isolated from computers that are used for production purposes and so that licenses that are needed for production are not claimed by other users. These Not For Production licenses have product codes that include the letters NFP, for example, M--PURNFP001-XEE93.

Special ways that these licenses behave as opposed to production licenses are:

• They do not need to be authorized by BlueCielo ECM Solutions. The licenses are available immediately after registering in the BlueCielo License Server.
• Production licenses and Not For Production licenses cannot be registered on the same BlueCielo License Server.
• They do not expire.
• They display a message when they are used.

The BlueCielo license server automatically releases a license claimed for a less capable client by the same user when a license for a more capable client is claimed. This prevents multiple client licenses from being claimed by the same user. For example, if a user has claimed an Office Web Client license and opens a document that activates a CAD application link that requires a Power Web Client license, the BlueCielo license server will reclaim the Office Web Client license and grant a Power Web Client license, if available.

The license server will also automatically grant available licenses for a more capable client application if a requested license for a less capable client is not available. For example, if an Office Web Client license is not available, the license server will grant an Office Client license or PowerUser license, if available. This makes it possible for customers to use remote application link functionality with existing licenses.

Tip    To control the granting of PowerUser licenses when an Office Client license is requested by the Application Integration client, see the description of the UsePURasOFF registry key in Windows registry keys.

Note    Existing prior release licenses must be upgraded before use with newer software. Ensure that the upgrade licenses are registered before upgrading existing installations. Licenses are backward-compatible. That is, licenses for newer releases of the software can be used with older releases of the software. The old licenses do not need to be registered.
